Q: What is a funds expense ratio? What is the difference between the gross and net expense ratios?
The expense ratio is a measure of the annual fees that a fund charges its shareholders. It expresses, as a percentage of assets, the total amount deducted each fiscal year for fund expenses, which may include management fees, administration fees, operating fees for services including custody, transfer agency and accounting, legal fees, audit fees, and other costs incurred by the fund. Fund expenses are accrued on a daily basis and typically paid out from a fund on a monthly basis.
The gross expense ratio represents the total expenses incurred by the fund during its most recent reporting period as a percentage of fund assets. The gross expense ratio excludes from its calculation any expense waivers, offsets or reimbursements committed to by the fund adviser. The net expense ratio represents the expenses actually paid by fund shareholders during the most recent reporting period as a percentage of fund assets. The net expense ratio includes expense waivers, reimbursements and other offsets made by the fund adviser.
